She is a Mumbai-based bilingual writer-translator, script-writer and theatre critic. Her Marathi novels Rita Welinkar and Tya Varshi have won State awards. Both have been translated by her into English. Her third novel Nirmala Patil Yanche Atmakathan was published last year. Her plays have been directed by Satyadev Dubey, Sunil Shanbag, Mahesh Dattani and others. She has written film scripts for Govind Nihalani, Nandan Kudhyadi and Arun Khopkar. As a writer on theatre, she has authored Playwright at the Centre on the history of Marathi drama, edited books on the works of Satyadev Dubey and Veenapani Chawla and compiled an oral history of Mumbai’s experimental theatre.
She has written an award-winning memoir, One Foot on the Ground, and a monograph, Shivaji Park, Dadar 28, History, Places, People. Her recent publications, both in collaboration with Jerry Pinto are – Behold the Word is God! Translation of 51 abhangas of Tukaram and Maya Nagari, a compilation of multilingual stories set in Mumbai.
She is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for contribution to the performing arts, Balshastri Jambhekar award for her translation of Jerry Pinto’s Em and the Big Hoom, Sahitya Akademi award for her translation of Laxmibai Tilak’s Smritichitre and Lifetime Achievement Awards at Ooty Literary Festival, Thespo, Maharashtra Foundation, Tata Literature Live and International Theatre Festival of Kerala.
