Kunzang Choden is a writer and storyteller known for her attempts to record and express the Bhutanese experience though both fiction and nonfiction. As Bhutan rapidly evolves, from an oral society to a digital one, she feels an urgent responsibility to capture the stories and knowledge that might be lost in this transition. She started her writing career in 1994 documenting Bhutanese folktales and tales of the mythical Yeti, before writing novels including her 2005 debut novel Circle of Karma, which was shortlisted for the Elle Prix des Lectrices award, short stories and children’s books. Her books have been translated into French, Dutch, Italian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Thai and others. Kunzang is the 2023 recipient of the SAARC Literature Award and the 2024 Bhutan Echoes Legacy Award. She is currently working on a memoir of her childhood in 1950s, the time that was a threshold to modern Bhutan.
